Preparation

The quality of work done by Brekhus Tile & Stone depends in large part upon the technical characteristics of preparation and the products. Materials used for bonding and adhesives can correct issues with leveling and drainage as well as providing vapor barriers, sound proofing, crack isolation and pressure equalization. Overall, these materials significantly affect the durability and attractiveness of the finished job.

Click photo to enlarge	"Mapelastic SM (Sheet Membrane) " system from Mapei: This material (in blue) is a "peel & stick" membrane for crack isolation and sound reduction. It can be easily installed over existing tile, and allows application of setting materials immediately after installation.

Mapei provides sealing and self-leveling, a solid, smooth base for the tile or stone installation. Mapei has a wide range of high-performance cement-based products which can be applied over a variety of base types. One example of a product employed by Brekhus Tile & Stone is Ultraplan 1: "Ultraplan 1 is an HCT^™ (High-Hydrated Cement Technology)-based, quick-setting, self-leveling, self-drying underlayment and repair mix for interior concrete and engineer-approved floors. It has high strength and is abrasion-resistant, able to withstand light foot traffic after 2 to 3 hours and vehicular rubber-wheel traffic after 3 days. Ultraplan 1 is suited for quick-turnaround leveling, smoothing and repairing of interior floors prior to the installation of floor coverings. Ceramic tile and natural stone can be installed 3 to 4 hours after application. Floor coverings – such as carpet, vinyl sheet goods, vinyl tile, vinyl composition tile (VCT), homogenous PVC, rubber and engineered wood plank – can be installed 16 to 24 hours after application. "

"Ultraprime L is a concentrated, solvent-free acrylic primer used prior to the installation of MAPEI self-leveling materials. It is green for easy identification. It improves the bond between a properly prepared substrate and MAPEI self-leveling underlayment or topping materials. "
